We’ve all heard the term comfort food, but one local author is taking this common use of words to a different level.
Thomaston native Melody Smith always loved to spend time in the kitchen, but after finding freedom from an abusive marriage, Smith's love of cooking took on a whole new meaning and according to her became a lifesaver.
After developing what Smith calls a plan of action, she was able to leave a life of chaos and discover her true calling.
"For so long I had bruises on my body and my heart," said Smith. "I lacked self confidence and allowed myself to fall into the rut of needing to be validated by a relationship regardless of the consequences. It wasn’t until I left that I realized I was capable of being happy by being myself."
Smith got a job and found a home for herself and son. Having a new found sense of self, she was able to focus on a healthier lifestyle.
"Once I was out, I blossomed," she said. "I was so happy to be in a calm and stable environment to call my own, that I began to enjoy the things I had enjoyed in the past. Cooking was one of those things. It was cathartic for me and I began to spend more time developing new recipes as I developed a new life."
Wanting to pass on her excitement of rediscovery of self, Smith began to develop a plan of action to help others who had suffered the same fate.
"A lot of women aren’t able to move on without help from an outside source," she said. "That source can be a shelter or support group. In our area, The Flint River Council on Battered Women serves this kind of purpose. Sometimes you just need to know you aren’t the only one going through this. Finding out you are not alone is validating"
In an attempt to repay those who had helped her in her new life, Smith took her love of cooking and put pen to paper.
"In all that time in the kitchen, I had compiled a huge collection of cherished as well as new recipes," said Smith. "I decided to write a cookbook, Melody’s Morsels, and take part of the proceeds from the sales and donate it back to the Flint River Council on Battered Women . It was the least I could do."
Smith will be hosting a book sale and signing at the First Baptist Church Sunday, Jan. 20, at 7:15 p.m.
"This is wonderful group and the work they do is important," said Smith. "I invite anyone who is interested in helping women in our area to purchase one of these cookbooks and help in the development of a plan of action for these deserving ladies."
